FBI arrests Gainesville police detective on 8 felony counts

What this means: Detective Kelvin Mattair, a Gainesville Police officer since 2018, faces 8 felony counts and $600,000 bond, and the FBI says he passed sensitive information to people involved in drug trafficking.

FBI agents arrested Gainesville police detective Kelvin Mattair Monday on eight felony counts, alleging he tipped off drug dealers; bond was set at $600,000.

Here's what to know:

  • Mattair, arrested Monday evening, had his first court appearance Tuesday morning, when the judge set $600,000 bond and ordered him to surrender his passport.

  • The 8 counts are 4 for divulging law enforcement sensitive information to investigation targets, 3 for unauthorized use of a restricted law enforcement database and 1 for unauthorized interception of oral communication.

  • The FBI's Jacksonville field office led the case and the investigation is ongoing; the specific drugs and people involved have not been released, and Mattair has not been convicted.

  • On Sept. 28, jurors found Perin guilty of first-degree murder and trespass, and he was sentenced to life in prison that day.

  • Blake Jackson and Keneth Altidor were each convicted of second-degree murder and acquitted of trespass; their sentencing is pending.

  • Cassels, of Hawthorne, was shot near Southeast U.S. Highway 301 in 2017; the three men were arrested in 2024 after new cell phone data evidence.

What this means: Irrigation stays limited to once weekly across Alachua County, and non-essential outdoor water use is banned, with no end date until normal rainfall returns after a 9-inch deficit.

  • The St. Johns River Water Management District oversees the plan and Alachua County Water Resources implements it; one irrigation cycle uses about 1,000 gallons, or 37 laundry loads.

  • Fees set June 1, 2026 still apply until then: $160 tow fee, $30 per day storage after 6 hours, and an $80 maximum immobilization fee.
