MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS
Tuesday's vote settles Alachua County's District 2 seat and Gainesville's mayor race
What this means: polls open Tuesday, August 18, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. + the four-way District 2 primary elects a county commissioner outright with no November rematch + Gainesville also picks between Mayor Harvey Ward and challenger Evan Moon the same day.
Early voting closed Saturday at 8 sites countywide, setting up Tuesday's universal primary that decides Alachua County's open District 2 seat and Gainesville's city elections.

Polls open Tuesday, August 18, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; confirm your assigned precinct and sample ballot at votealachua.gov before you go
Because all four District 2 county candidates are Democrats with no other party qualified, Tuesday's result is final, with no November rematch for that seat

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Gainesville commits $500,000 to help downtown Streatery-area businesses renovate
What this means: up to $50,000 per business address for storefront and outdoor upgrades near the Streatery + work completed since March 1, 2026 can qualify for reimbursement + the program is expected to launch this fall pending final commission approval.
Gainesville's General Policy Committee advanced a $500,000 grant program Thursday, offering downtown businesses up to $50,000 each for storefront and outdoor-dining upgrades.
Here's what to know:
Grants cover 100% of a business's first $15,000 in eligible costs, then a 50% match up to $50,000 total, for property between West University Avenue, SW 2nd Avenue, South Main Street and SW 2nd Street
Work completed between March 1, 2026, and the program's fall 2026 launch can qualify for reimbursement, but recipients must sign a 10-year forgivable mortgage tying improvements to the property
Business owners can start planning now by emailing [email protected] or calling 352-393-8200 ahead of the single competitive application round
INFRASTRUCTURE
Gainesville is sitting on $14 million in unspent tree fees as canopy debate resumes
What this means: developers have paid roughly $14.1 million into the city's tree fund since fiscal year 2019 + only $4 million is budgeted for land purchases in 2026 + commissioners get an updated tree inventory this fall.
