Sheriff's deputies seek suspect after Hawthorne shooting leaves man wounded
What this means: a man was shot Monday, Aug. 24 in the 6000 block of SE 225th Street in Hawthorne + the shooter remains unidentified and at large + the Alachua County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to come forward now.

Gainesville commission votes to drop historic buffers around University Heights
What this means: commissioners voted 5-1 on Thursday, Aug. 27 to erase the 100-foot buffer that has capped nearby buildings at three or four stories + property inside University Heights can now be built up to six stories under existing U9 zoning + planning staff must bring the finished amendment back for a final vote by January 2027.

Here's what to know:
The 5-1 vote (Commissioner Ed Book dissenting, Commissioner Desmon Duncan-Walker absent) directs planning staff to draft an amendment deleting the buffers adopted in 2017
The amendment still needs sign-off from the City Plan Board and Historic Preservation Board before a final commission vote, required by January 2027 under the motion's own deadline
Commissioners say the change applies only to University Heights; buffers elsewhere in the city are not affected

What this means: low-income and senior homeowners have until Monday, Aug. 31 to apply for the city's NAVAHAP hardship discount + the program reduces the new fire, stormwater and solid waste assessments moving from GRU's monthly bill onto the annual property tax bill starting Oct. 1 + apply now by phone or email before the window closes.
